This Weeks MSA Member Spotlight recognizes Janet Downs.  Janet is an Enrolled Agent (EA), Accredited Business Accountant (ABA), Accredited Tax Advisor (ATA) and Accredited Retirement Advisor (ARA). She currently serves as Executive Director of the Missouri Society of Accountants, having previously served as Secretary and President of the organization. She also has served as Chair of the Education and Professional Development Committee with the National Society of Accountants.

Janet Downs has a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with an Emphasis in Accounting from University of Missouri at Kansas City. She began working at Midwest Bookkeeping & Tax Service in 1977 and later purchased the business in 1998.  When asked Janet said “I always wanted to be an accountant – little did I know- I took 2 years of bookkeeping in high school and was hooked.”

Janet’s most important skill is “the personal touch.”  Remembering your client’s name and face even if they only come into your office once a year.  Her greatest accomplishment is surviving this business each year.  She has a supportive husband and great children, great staff and great clients – “what more could anyone ask for!” Her tip for working in the Accounting World is “Be careful of what you wish for.  This business has provided a good living for me, but you cannot take anything for granted.  Always treat others as you want to be treated.”

Janet is also a member of the National Society of Accountants and the Raytown Chamber of Commerce.
